Introduction by Mrs. Hudson
In Book Three and Story 6 in the collection series – Sherlock Holmes and the Queen of Thieves. Ah, Mr. Holmes always had a way of pulling one into his world of intrigue and danger, whether one liked it or not. For years, I fancied myself merely his landlady – a cook, cleaner, and occasional ear for his peculiar musings. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I imagine I’d find myself recruited to infiltrate the underbelly of London’s criminal elite.
It all began over a warm dinner at 221B Baker Street, a setting deceptively comforting for the proposition Holmes was about to lay before me. He and Dr. Watson were in pursuit of Gracie Diamond Black, a shadowy figure tied to The Forty Elephants, an infamous gang of women thieves. What they required, to my utter disbelief, was not just information but someone to infiltrate her gang—a role Holmes deemed I was “uniquely suited” for.
“I’m a middle-aged landlady, Mr. Holmes,” I protested, half incredulous, half amused. “Not some cunning spy.” But Holmes, with that gleam in his eye, assured me otherwise, weaving tales of my charm and resourcefulness as though I’d been training for espionage my whole life. Dr. Watson, bless him, tried to bolster the argument with tales of justice and valor, though the thought of “stealing regularly” didn’t quite sit with me.
Still, when faced with the history of The Forty Elephants—a lineage of crime spanning decades, led by Thomas Diamond and Mary Black – it became clear: if anyone had the audacity to outwit such a gang, it was someone like me. Or so Holmes insisted.
Whether it was foolishness or bravery that led me to agree, I’ll let you decide. But one thing is certain: after that evening, over my famous Mrs. Hudson’s recipes: Chicken and Mushroom Tarts, Meat Pies and Sweet Potatoes, and to top it off, my Master of Disguise cookies, my life as a quiet landlady shifted dramatically. For when Sherlock Holmes has a proposal, it’s best to brace yourself—for you never know where the game will lead.
Recipe: Little Chicken and Mushroom Tarts
These elegant and flavorful Little Chicken and Mushroom Tarts are perfect for an afternoon tea or a light supper. They encapsulate the refined yet practical spirit of Victorian London, much like a discreet observation from Holmes himself.
Ingredients:
Pastry:
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick or 113g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3-4 tablespoons ice water

- 1/2 cup grated cheese (cheddar or gruyère)
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup (60ml) chicken broth
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions:
Prepare the Pastry:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together.
- Form the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
Prepare the Filling:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and become tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the shredded chicken, heavy cream, chicken broth, and thyme. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce has thickened slightly, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
Assemble the Tarts:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the chilled pastry dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Use a round cookie cutter (about 3-inch diameter) to cut out pastry circles.
- Press the pastry circles into muffin tins or small tartlet molds.
- Spoon the chicken and mushroom filling into each pastry shell.
- Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg.
Bake:
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the crusts are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Let the tarts cool slightly before removing them from the tins.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve the tarts warm as an appetizer or a light lunch.
- Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme before serving for an added touch of freshness.
- Serve with a side of a light salad or a dipping sauce like a creamy garlic aioli.
- These Little Chicken and Mushroom Tarts are also excellent for brunch gatherings.

Recipe: Master of Disguise (Date-Sweetened Cookies)
Much like the clever disguises Holmes might employ, these Master of Disguise (Date-Sweetened Cookies) are deceptively simple yet full of character. Sweetened naturally with dates, as a disguise, when sugar was scarce in the Victorian era, they offer a wholesome and satisfying treat, perfect for a quick energy boost during a long day of investigation, or indeed, infiltration!
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups (225g) pitted dates, chopped
- ½ cup (120ml) hot water
- ½ cup (120ml) coconut oil or unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups (180g) whole wheat flour or oat flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (60g) chopped nuts, nut butter, or chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the dates: Soak the chopped dates in hot water for 10 minutes. Afterward, blend them into a smooth paste using a food processor or immersion blender.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the date paste, melted coconut oil (or butter), egg, and vanilla extract. Whisk until well combined.
- Mix dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
- Combine: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until fully incorporated. If desired, fold in nuts or chocolate chips now.
- Shape and bake: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions onto a lined baking sheet, spacing them apart. Flatten slightly if desired for a more even bake.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 10–12 minutes until golden brown around the edges.
- Cool: Let cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serving Suggestions:
- Enjoy these Master of Disguise (Date-Sweetened Cookies) warm with a comforting cup of tea or coffee.
- Pair with Greek yogurt for a balanced and nutritious snack.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert.
- Furthermore, for extra indulgence, drizzle with melted dark chocolate.
